And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commands he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. (KJV)

(a) CHANGES OF ν – The rule that σύν in composition, before σ followed by another consonant, and before ζ, drops its ν, is often disregarded in the N. T. ; thus we always find συνσταυρουν, συνστρατιωτης, συνζην, συνζητειν, συνζυγος. In other words, however, the omis sion is made, e.g. συστατικός, συστενάζω, συστοιχειν, συστρέφω, συστροφη, συσχηματιζειν. See Wahl’s clavis, and Lachmann’s pref. p. 40. Further, the oldest (uncial) MSS. often omit the assimilation of the ν in the two prepositions συν and εν before labials and palatals, sometimes also before λ, and σ, thus συνπαραλαβειν, συνμαθητής, συνκαθισάντων, ενκακειν, ενγεγραμμένος, συνλυπούμενος, σύνσωμα, etc., and likewise in separated words εν μεσω (only in the Apocalypse does Tdf. [ed. 7 ; cf. Prol. to Sept. ed. 4, p. lxxii] write them always as one word : εμμεσω), εν Κανα. In particular it may be noticed that in compounds with εν and συν cod. Vat. (and Sin.) almost always neglects assimilation when these prepositions preserve their proper signification ; see Bttm.’s Rev. of Kuenen and Cobet’s ed. of cod. Vat. in the theol. Stud. u. Krit. for 1862 p. 180. On the other hand, the mode of writing as one word is often found, as εμμεσω, εγκανα, συμπασι, etc.
