(a) The phrase σειραῖς ζόφου is admittedly a strange expression, and in some manuscripts this gave rise to a slight change in orthography (σιροῖς; see 1.59) with the resulting meaning being ‘in pits of darkness.’ If, however, one adopts the text ἀλλὰ σειραῖς ζόφου ταρταρώσας, it may be possible to interpret the entire expression as ‘but he chained them in the darkness of hell.’ (Johannes P. Louw & Eugene Nida, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament Based on Semantic Domains, 1988)
