Interlude: Where Wisdom Is Found
εστιν γαρ αργυριω τοπος οθεν γινεται τοπος δε χρυσιω οθεν διηθειται
ִּ֤י יֵ֣שׁ לַכֶּ֣סֶף מוֹצָ֑א וּ֝מָק֗וֹם לַזָּהָ֥ב יָזֹֽקּוּ׃
Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
2 σιδηρος μεν γαρ εκ γης γινεται χαλκος δε ισα λιθω λατομειται
ַּ֭רְזֶל מֵעָפָ֣ר יֻקָּ֑ח וְ֝אֶ֗בֶן יָצ֥וּק נְחוּשָֽׁה׃
Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3 ταξιν εθετο σκοτει και παν περας αυτος εξακριβαζεται λιθος σκοτια και σκια θανατου
ֵ֤ץ ׀ שָׂ֤ם לַחֹ֗שֶׁךְ וּֽלְכָל־תַּ֭כְלִית ה֣וּא חוֹקֵ֑ר אֶ֖בֶן אֹ֣פֶל וְצַלְמָֽוֶת׃
He sets an end to darkness, and searches out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4 διακοπη χειμαρρου απο κονιας οι δε επιλανθανομενοι οδον δικαιαν ησθενησαν εκ βροτων
ָּ֤רַץ נַ֨חַל ׀ מֵֽעִם־גָּ֗ר הַֽנִּשְׁכָּחִ֥ים מִנִּי־רָ֑גֶל דַּ֖לּוּ מֵאֱנ֣וֹשׁ נָֽעוּ׃
The flood breaks out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5 γη εξ αυτης εξελευσεται αρτος υποκατω αυτης εστραφη ωσει πυρ
ֶ֗רֶץ מִמֶּ֥נָּה יֵֽצֵא־לָ֑חֶם וְ֝תַחְתֶּ֗יהָ נֶהְפַּ֥ךְ כְּמוֹ־אֵֽשׁ׃
As for the earth, out of it comes bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6 τοπος σαπφειρου οι λιθοι αυτης και χωμα χρυσιον αυτω
ְקוֹם־סַפִּ֥יר אֲבָנֶ֑יהָ וְעַפְרֹ֖ת זָהָ֣ב לֽוֹ׃
The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it has dust of gold.
7 τριβος ουκ εγνω αυτην πετεινον και ου παρεβλεψεν αυτην οφθαλμος γυπος
ָ֭תִיב לֹֽא־יְדָ֣עוֹ עָ֑יִט וְלֹ֥א שְׁ֝זָפַ֗תּוּ עֵ֣ין אַיָּֽה׃
There is a path which no fowl knows, and which the vulture's eye has not seen:
8 ουκ επατησαν αυτην υιοι αλαζονων ου παρηλθεν επ αυτης λεων
ֹֽא־הִדְרִיכֻ֥הוּ בְנֵי־שָׁ֑חַץ לֹֽא־עָדָ֖ה עָלָ֣יו שָֽׁחַל׃
The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9 εν ακροτομω εξετεινεν χειρα αυτου κατεστρεψεν δε εκ ριζων ορη
ַּֽ֭חַלָּמִישׁ שָׁלַ֣ח יָד֑וֹ הָפַ֖ךְ מִשֹּׁ֣רֶשׁ הָרִֽים׃
He puts forth his hand upon the rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.
10 δινας δε ποταμων ερρηξεν παν δε εντιμον ειδεν μου ο οφθαλμος
ַּ֭צּוּרוֹת יְאֹרִ֣ים בִּקֵּ֑עַ וְכָל־יְ֝קָ֗ר רָאֲתָ֥ה עֵינֽוֹ׃
He cuts out rivers among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.
11 βαθη δε ποταμων ανεκαλυψεν εδειξεν δε εαυτου δυναμιν εις φως
ִ֭בְּכִי נְהָר֣וֹת חִבֵּ֑שׁ וְ֝תַעֲלֻמָ֗הּ יֹ֣צִא אֽוֹר׃ פ
He binds the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid brings he forth to light.
12 η δε σοφια ποθεν ευρεθη ποιος δε τοπος εστιν της επιστημης
ְֽ֭הַחָכְמָה מֵאַ֣יִן תִּמָּצֵ֑א וְאֵ֥י זֶ֝ה מְק֣וֹם בִּינָֽה׃
But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
13 ουκ οιδεν βροτος οδον αυτης ουδε μη ευρεθη εν ανθρωποις
ֹא־יָדַ֣ע אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עֶרְכָּ֑הּ וְלֹ֥א תִ֝מָּצֵ֗א בְּאֶ֣רֶץ הֽ͏ַחַיִּֽים׃
Man knows not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14 αβυσσος ειπεν ουκ εστιν εν εμοι και θαλασσα ειπεν ουκ εστιν μετ εμου
ְּה֣וֹם אָ֭מַר לֹ֣א בִי־הִ֑יא וְיָ֥ם אָ֝מַ֗ר אֵ֣ין עִמָּדִֽי׃
The depth says, It is not in me: and the sea says, It is not with me.
15 ου δωσει συγκλεισμον αντ αυτης και ου σταθησεται αργυριον ανταλλαγμα αυτης
ֹא־יֻתַּ֣ן סְג֣וֹר תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ וְלֹ֥א יִ֝שָּׁקֵ֗ל כֶּ֣סֶף מְחִירָֽהּ׃
It cannot be got for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16 και ου συμβασταχθησεται χρυσιω ωφιρ εν ονυχι τιμιω και σαπφειρω
ֹֽא־תְ֭סֻלֶּה בְּכֶ֣תֶם אוֹפִ֑יר בְּשֹׁ֖הַם יָקָ֣ר וְסַפִּֽיר׃
It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 ουκ ισωθησεται αυτη χρυσιον και υαλος και το αλλαγμα αυτης σκευη χρυσα
ֹא־יַעַרְכֶ֣נָּה זָ֭הָב וּזְכוֹכִ֑ית וּתְמ֖וּרָתָ֣הּ כְּלִי־פָֽז׃
The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18 μετεωρα και γαβις ου μνησθησεται και ελκυσον σοφιαν υπερ τα εσωτατα
ָאמ֣וֹת וְ֭גָבִישׁ לֹ֣א יִזָּכֵ֑ר וּמֶ֥שֶׁךְ חָ֝כְמָ֗ה מִפְּנִינִֽים׃
No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19 ουκ ισωθησεται αυτη τοπαζιον αιθιοπιας χρυσιω καθαρω ου συμβασταχθησεται
ֹֽא־יַ֭עַרְכֶנָּה פִּטְדַת־כּ֑וּשׁ בְּכֶ֥תֶם טָ֝ה֗וֹר לֹ֣א תְסֻלֶּֽה׃ פ
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20 η δε σοφια ποθεν ευρεθη ποιος δε τοπος εστιν της συνεσεως
ְֽ֭הַחָכְמָה מֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֑וֹא וְאֵ֥י זֶ֝֗ה מְק֣וֹם בִּינָֽה׃
Whence then comes wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 λεληθεν παντα ανθρωπον και απο πετεινων του ουρανου εκρυβη
ְֽ֭נֶעֶלְמָה מֵעֵינֵ֣י כָל־חָ֑י וּמֵע֖וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם נִסְתָּֽרָה׃
Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 η απωλεια και ο θανατος ειπαν ακηκοαμεν δε αυτης το κλεος
ֲבַדּ֣וֹן וָ֭מָוֶת אָ֣מְר֑וּ בְּ֝אָזְנֵ֗ינוּ שָׁמַ֥עְנוּ שִׁמְעָֽהּ׃
Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23 ο θεος ευ συνεστησεν αυτης την οδον αυτος δε οιδεν τον τοπον αυτης
ֱ֭לֹהִים הֵבִ֣ין דַּרְכָּ֑הּ וְ֝ה֗וּא יָדַ֥ע אֶת־מְקוֹמָֽהּ׃
God understands the way thereof, and he knows the place thereof.
24 αυτος γαρ την υπ ουρανον πασαν εφορα ειδως τα εν τη γη παντα α εποιησεν
ִּי־ה֭וּא לִקְצוֹת־הָאָ֣רֶץ יַבִּ֑יט תַּ֖חַת כָּל־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם יִרְאֶֽה׃
For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heaven;
25 ανεμων σταθμον υδατος τε μετρα
ַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לָר֣וּחַ מִשְׁקָ֑ל וּ֝מַ֗יִם תִּכֵּ֥ן בְּמִדָּֽה׃
To make the weight for the winds; and he weights the waters by measure.
26 οτε εποιησεν ουτως υετον ηριθμησεν και οδον εν τιναγματι φωνας
ַּעֲשֹׂת֣וֹ לַמָּטָ֣ר חֹ֑ק וְ֝דֶ֗רֶךְ לַחֲזִ֥יז קֹלֽוֹת׃
When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27 τοτε ειδεν αυτην και εξηγησατο αυτην ετοιμασας εξιχνιασεν
ָ֣ז רָ֭אָהּ וַֽיְסַפְּרָ֑הּ הֱ֝כִינָ֗הּ וְגַם־חֲקָרָֽהּ׃
Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28 ειπεν δε ανθρωπω ιδου η θεοσεβεια εστιν σοφια το δε απεχεσθαι απο κακων εστιν επιστημη
ַיֹּ֤אמֶר ׀ לָֽאָדָ֗ם הֵ֤ן יִרְאַ֣ת אֲ֭דֹנָי הִ֣יא חָכְמָ֑ה וְס֖וּר מֵרָ֣ע בִּינָֽה׃ ס
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
